The regular season ends Sunday, Sept. 27. From Tuesday on, the MLB slate goes from 15 games a day to four, then two, then one. Our free MLB Pick of the Day keeps running through the World Series. But October betting is a different game, and the card behaves differently on purpose.

There are also off days: Sept. 28, Oct. 2, several between rounds, and travel days in the World Series. On those days there is simply no MLB card.
What changes in October
The prices get sharper. Every playoff game is a national-TV event with maximum betting interest. More money and more attention mean fewer soft lines than a Tuesday in July.
Aces pitch more. Off days let teams skip their fourth and fifth starters. Our model rates teams on season-long win percentage, run differential, and run prevention. It does not know which starter is going tonight, and in October the starter matters more than usual. See starting pitching vs bullpens for why.
Home field doesn't grow. Across the 2015-2025 postseasons (405 games, excluding 2020's neutral-site rounds), home teams won 53.6%. That's the same small edge as the regular season. It isn't a fortress. More in how much home field matters.
Tiny samples. A whole postseason is roughly 40 to 50 games. Nobody's October record, ours included, says much on its own.
What our card does differently
Three rules for the postseason:
- No forced card. In the regular season, if no game clears our quality gates, the engine still posts its top-ranked games so the internal card isn't empty. In the playoffs that would mean betting the only World Series game every night, whatever the price. So from the Wild Card round on, if nothing clears the gates, the card stays empty.
- No placeholder matchups. MLB lists future playoff games against teams like "AL 3/6 Winner" before the matchup exists. The engine skips those until real teams are in place.
- The free-pick bar doesn't move. The free pick still needs 52%+ model win probability and a 3-10% edge, like every other day. See how we choose the Pick of the Day.
Put together: expect fewer free picks in October, and more days with no pick at all. That isn't the model going quiet. With one or two games a day, most days simply don't have a price worth posting.
How to bet the postseason without wrecking a bankroll
- Keep the stake flat. "It's the playoffs" is not a reason to bet 3u. See flat betting.
- Check the starter before you bet. If the line moved a lot overnight, a pitching change is the usual reason.

- Judge the season, not October. One postseason is a small sample stacked on top of 162 games.
After the World Series
When the season ends, the MLB card goes dark until Opening Day, and the homepage will say so. The daily picks don't stop, though:
